In my time as a professional speaker, I have been honored with many positive comments from audience members. Three of these comments have defined, shaped, and continue to influence, what I do from the speaking platform.

 

The first comment came very early in my career as a motivational keynote speaker—a large association had invited me back to give a second keynote speech based on feedback from the previous year's conference. After the speech was over, an individual who had been in the audience the previous year came up to me and stated, "I want to tell you how much the speech you gave last year changed my life!" She went on to describe how several points I made had resonated deeply with her, and when she applied the recommended techniques, her team became the top producers in her division.

 

Why did this participant’s comment have such a huge impact on me?! Well, most of my work up to that point was in the training world, where the belief at the time was the only effective way to make a message stick was to 'drill it into them' over long, drawn-out days of training. The speech that had 'changed her life' the previous year was only one hour long!

 

What this comment taught me was people do not need to have lengthy interventions to make a difference in their lives. In fact, if a one-hour speech has a message that is relevant, stories and anecdotes that provide inspiration, and tools and techniques that are easy to implement, people will be motivated to make the necessary changes in their lives to strive (and reach) their personal best!

The second comment that significantly influenced me came after a speech to 1,000 government and agency workers. An individual remarked, "That was the most interactive speech I have ever experienced!" What caught my attention was the use of the word, 'interactive,' which, according to the dictionary definition, would not describe 1,000 people sitting in chairs while someone speaks to them from the front of the room!

 

After I listened to her describe the parts of the speech that had touched her, I asked her to describe how she felt I had 'interacted.' She told me that for much of the speech, she felt that she was the only one in the audience, and that I had truly interacted with her mind and heart by creating word pictures that connected-the-dots in both her personal and professional life.

 

The learning lesson for me was that although people are seeking intellectual stimulation, unless you touch their hearts, nothing will change!

The third defining comment came from the Senior Vice-President of a large business after I delivered an inspirational keynote speech for his management team. In his closing remarks, he said, "Neil's strength is that he brings logic to soft skills!" This was a validating moment for me. As a recovering engineer (my wife's words), it had been apparent to me that this nebulous thing called 'soft skills' was tough for people to get their arms around—that people were finding the complexities of human behavior the most challenging aspect of life and work.

 

I felt it was incumbent on me to develop and hone a presentation style that would blend the emotional aspects of humor and stories within an analytical framework—to take life's simple truths and present them in such a way as to engage people's minds. To receive such a strong endorsement from this Senior Vice-President made the effort all worthwhile.

In sum, wisdom does not come with age—it comes from experience! And I am fortunate and thankful to have experienced an incredible amount as a professional speaker, trainer, consultant, and facilitator. Life is a wonderful teacher . . . if you are paying attention to the messages!
